Women’s Cancer Prevention PNG (WCP PNG) is a Christian charity working to improve health and wellbeing in communities across Papua New Guinea. Our focus is on preventing avoidable deaths from breast and cervical cancer while supporting communities to strengthen their knowledge, confidence, and ability to improve health outcomes.
WCP PNG was founded in 2023 by Dr Eleanor (Ella) Gahanao and Nevelle Gahanao after witnessing the devastating impact of cervical cancer on women and their families in Papua New Guinea. During their work in PNG, they saw many young women presenting with advanced cervical cancer, when treatment options were limited or unavailable. It became clear that many of these deaths could have been prevented through greater awareness, earlier detection, and improved access to care.
This inspired the creation of WCP PNG, with a vision of reducing the burden of women’s cancers while supporting stronger, healthier communities across Papua New Guinea.
We believe lasting change comes from working alongside communities, recognising their strengths, and supporting locally led solutions. Through collaboration, education, and community development, we aim to build sustainable improvements in health that benefit individuals, families, and future generations.
WCP PNG is supported by a dedicated team committed to improving health outcomes across Morobe Province. Our team includes two nurses and 20 trained WCP Champions working within communities across the province. Through their local knowledge, relationships, and commitment, they help strengthen community engagement and support our work to improve health and wellbeing.
