Women’s Cancer Prevention PNG (WCP PNG) was founded in 2023 by Dr Eleanor (Ella) Gahanao and Nevelle Gahanao. During their work in Papua New Guinea (PNG) they were struck and deeply saddened by the number of young women who lost their lives to cervical cancer. Most of these women were presenting at a very late stage, which meant there were limited or no treatment options. It was clear that many of these deaths could have been prevented with relatively simple interventions, such as screening programmes and education, resulting in earlier detection.
After several discussions with the National Department of Health and the Morobe Provincial Government Eleanor and Nevelle founded WCP PNG – a charity aiming to reduce the rates of cervical and breast cancer in PNG.
To date, WCP PNG have obtained charity status in PNG as well as in the UK and have engaged with local leaders and health professionals in PNG to help plan their initiatives. They have also visited communities in different areas of PNG to understand better their awareness of breast and cervical cancer, and to learn how the communities believe the charity can best support them.
WCP PNG is a Christian charity aiming to improve the healthcare and lives of women in PNG.
